Hitting the trails instead of the slopes!

[?]

While the rest of you were getting all kinds of snow I was out on my Vulture having fun. These shots are from a great ride that I did with some friends last weekend in the hills above Palm Desert.

Cruising through the cactus.

It did involve some soft stuff though. Unfortunately it was sand. First we had to ride down through it.

Down through the wash.

Then we had to ride and walk up the next one. It was a couple of miles and about a thousand feet of elevation gain. It wasn’t too bad, but it wasn’t that fun either.

Fortunately it lead to even more great single track. Sometimes you do have to earn your turns, I guess.

It was so much fun I think I’m going to go back in a few weeks.

Sweet! I used to climb down that way at the Devil’s Punchbowl and drive jeeps in the hills with my dad back in highschool. Beautiful area!

This is quite a way south of the Punchbowl, but it’s similar. One big difference is the amazing amount of cactus. The Punchbowl has some, but nothing like this. I grew up in Victorville and have done a decent amount of climbing at the Punchbowl too. Yep, it’s beautiful.

Nice bikin pics, I’m gettin motivated to do some shreddin myself. I spoke bird fowl with the Vulture and he’s almost done with the rapid oxidation process, metal smithin, you know, weldin and brazin…I’m f–in stoked. Look out peeps there’s gonna be a new 1×1 hombre in town! I’m so excited, I just can’t hide it…
Cpt. Red Beard, those bindings are around if my pup didn’t eat them yet! I could use a few buckaroos for em as I am in a ski and bike situation right now…but bein a fellow funjunkie I’m sure we can figure somthin out if your strapped too! McD and Wolfy have my digits…

awesome!!! good to have some correspondence from our satellite riders, Reedster. the ride sounds just about right. “ain’t having fun till your boot packin’.” say, how about a pic or 2 of that custom Vulture 29er. i haven’t even seen it in person yet.

    happy Friday,

    I love Fridays!

I should be out on the Vulture this weekend, so I’ll get some shots. It’s currently got the Reba on the front and 4 gears in the back. I just built a new wheel with 8 gears and then I’m going to rebuild the SS wheel once the 8-speed is on and working.

    Enjoy.

sweet! you have the condition - wheelbuildingitus. i’ve been afflicted for a little while now and things aren’t goin’ back to the way they was. someone suggested i could buy some wheelset pretty cheap to replace the gravely-sketchy hub setup on my SS and i thought, “nope, i’ve graduated beyond that. i’d gladly kick down a few extra duckets and lace my own $hit.” money ain’t everything - heck, it’s barely currency anymore. what’s currency? it’s what you trade your time/skills/tools/health for. i’d rather just invest in the semi-raw guds, have fun lacing some wheels, and ride away.

see you in mountains. or the desert. maybe a trail, and definately on the sharp end.

Yea, well I really needed the right mentor with the skills and tools. He used to own a bike shop and still has a lot of the stuff. That’s important, because Shimano had the wrong specs for their hub on their website, which meant I had the wrong spokes. He luckily had the right ones and helped me build it. It tested fine today with some 3′ dropoffs so now it’s time to build up the SS wheel. I keep building new wheels and my bike keeps getting heavier. What’s up with that?

Yea, I’d rather spend a little more and do it myself.

And, Yes, we definitely need to hook up at some point for some playing. Until then, keep shredding.
