The Coolest 24hour race: From A Fucktards View
Cool, CA — Calavera Cycles/Team Bacon Strip, y Huevos ride bikes repeatedly for 24 consecutive hours.
Shawn, Craig, Nate, Jeff (y huevos), Lee, Mikee, Sean and I (TBS/Calavera Cycles) raced @ Cool supported by Coleen, Tennile, and Philip our dedicated team Mechanic. It was a great event no doubt about that. There were issues @ the end, but remember this: We all had fun, it all kicked ass, and we all left wanting to come back to the Coolest 24 hour course and our teams next year (as long as it isn’t raining…). If any other riders see this let us know how the race went for you and where your pics are!
I started the race with a 53 minute lap. Which was pretty good for having to weave through that much traffic. We were all able to keep it mostly under hour laps, except for me. On my 3rd lap I’d spent an hour or two of my transition time converting my San Jose from fixie street to cross trail mode. It went perfectly with the help of team mechanic Philip. I got down to the start/finish at the exact moment I realized I’d forgotten both my race numbers, as I was voicing that oversight, Lee rode up, looked at me and said, “does the word fucktard mean anything to you?” What could I do? I went back and got my number.
Other notables: Bacon Kickstart @ the Cafe in cool, Nooner had trouble keeping his crank stuck on his bike, Gris got his fastest lap on a cross bike, finished a lap w/o lights, nobody puked.
We stayed around to hear the results and take a shot at winning some raffle swag. Both were dissappointing. Team Bacon Strip/Calavera cycles (mike, mikee, sean and lee) did 6 laps each and were don by 11:30. Not sure if we got 2nd of 3rd because the second placers also had 24 laps, but the 3rd placers had 23 laps and we didn’t place at all. So we think that the lap Nooner had his grank fall off in the first minute and went back for a wrench and restart must have been the screwup. But we didn’t get a chance to protest as the results were not posted prior to announcement.
But we know we kicked ass!!! It was hard keeping up with you guys! Thanks for coming out!

To further the fucktard point…I was finishing a lap, running the last 50 yards or so (running is a fucktard activity and why I have to run through the start-finish area is a different episode of leetism) when I see Wolfy and Gris grinning at me because they had been so clever as to show up just as I was pitting. I overheard the number plate remark and made my little comment. I do wish I had had my camera with as the look on their faces was fairly priceless. Utter fucktardness would be the way to sum it up.
The race was a blast and I have to thank Phillip for keeping that fire going all night which was the awesome source of comfort cuz it was chilly and my clothes really did not dry out between laps. I will go back next year for sure. It would be nice but not necessary to work out the lap number issue with the guy who ran the thing just to get it right not because I have suddenly reverted to my roadie racing mentality of lo those many years ago.
Glad I got to hang and ride with great folks and maybe next year or at another venue we can get more teambaconstrippers to come on out and make it more TBSish.
morning all. i just woke up. 13 hours of sleep was just the ticket.
i had a great time. too bad we got screwed on the results.
one hour of riding followed by 3 hours of chilln’ is nice. although, for me, the sleep deprevation was harder than the riding. starting lap 5 was ruff.
we should definately do more 24 hour events as tbs. a whole herd of foque-tardes would be sweet.
bet you with you’d been wearing this.
The race was super fun. The motivation to go ride and go ride hard would have been tougher without teammates. But with the four of us all so stoked to be there and banging out consistently good laps (except me) it wasn’t bad. And then when the climbs got long and tiring there was always someone just ahead, or behind to pass or defend against!
And I ‘m still in compliance…

great job fellas, and especially to the pit bosses that kept you on track. it helps to have someone keeping the food hot, the beers cold, and the batteries charged. don’t sweat the lap thing, afterall, having that uncertainty in the final results kinda blurrs the whole who’s better thing. if you guys rode as hard as you wanted to and had as much fun as you could, then RFO!
i’ll hit a few more long/24 races this year and hope to eventually partake in the fun w/ everyone.

A link to the results is below.
Team Bacon Strip/Calavera Cycles DID take 3rd place! y juevos took 9th. Also bueno. But it looks like they don’t have their timing system very dialed in yet? Take a look see…

Weird, we got on the board because the 2nd place team defaulted on a lap. Strange.
And it was Sean’s FIRST lap that didn’t get counted!?!?!?!

that results page is three shades of screwed up.
the race and hangin’ out with you tards was still fun.
anyone want to do 12 hours of weaverville over memorial day weekend? as solos.
[...] the bartender, Scott, asked me if I knew Nat Pellman, which I do. I guess he heard me mention the 24 hour race I did last may and thought there might be a connection, even though Nat moved to Seattle a year [...]
