Downieville Classic 2007

[?]

Grisly Wound Team Bacon Strip mobbed the Downieville Classic for the 2007 race and we dripped our nasty bacon grease all over the course…

Nooner, Mr. Martin and I found Gris already perforated @ packet pickup Friday afternoon. I decided an easy run up to Sierra Butte lookout with Juni and Smella would be a good warm up; he went with a gnarly crash on a practice ride down the DH course. 11 stitches on Friday the 13th. Though most bacteria consider the GBG a malignancy, he did waste some body resources beating them down, and bleeding in the middle of the night. Caption for the pic on the left is: “Think I’ll nut-up and ride the DH tomorrow!”

Nooner, Ryan, Martin, Giarc the Bustigator, GBG, and I had a fun race for the most part. Some issues, some flats, some cramps, some suffering, but nothing permanently damaging. The intra-team competition was fierce in the sport class. Had to stare down Giarc in the start mob, and let him choose which elbow was coming.

Mike pre raceCan’t say I loved getting beaten up on that DH. Lots of adult heads, drops, g-outs, roots, narrow channels. I rode everything and nothing in particular was unreasonable, but trying to ride that @ race pace in a fog of dust was less than stellar on my bike. The first half of the race is all fire road, which is nice cause you can pass (I had at least 590 of 600 people ahead of me @ start) but i’m not sure that’s what I look for in a race.

Camping @ Wild Plum was fab! Sooooooo nice and cooooooolllll a good respite from the balmy buttery air in Reno. Thanks Sean for organizing that. Good food, good amigos, good dirt. Another fun TBS race. Maybe I’ll do the Puff next year and run support and take photos for D-Ville…

Nice one Grizz! How did you end up doing? The Downieville site hasn’t posted any results yet.

Get this though, Caylin ROCKED the women’s DH and took first place in the women’s expert category! I think she’s going to get a new nickname, like FastGirl or something. Glad you all had fun.

how about 12,700 feet of climbing in 65 miles of TRT? i’m open to suggestions for getting back to the starting point.

yes, Caylin does need a nickname - w.r.t. piloting her mtb at mach speeds. perhaps she already has one?

I snuck in and tapped a pint of drain fluid from the GrislyBikeGeek’s perforated arm last night. With any luck a tiny drop will be enough to grislyfy us and not kill us. I’ll test a dab on the neighborhood Raccoon tonight and if it’s stable we’ll pass it around @ the GBB tomorrow evening. They had to call out hazmat for the little bit that leaked out on the trail Friday, but I think I’ve stabilized it.

    M:

Nice to see you and all that facial hair on Sat. It was a pleasure to meet your wife and pooch also. Man, I love that race - so dusty, dirty and treacherous. I have yet to lose and eye or any other important body part while racing it, but I can almost feel my time coming.

Keep GBG’s ooze away from me, I don’t need that juice to be dangerous to myself.

I’d love to join you with a definite maybe to accompany Japhy on his epic, but I know the divorce papers would be attached to my wrenching stand when I got back. Maybe if I sooth her with a weekend or three of honey do’s I can sneak a loooong ride in.

Just spoke with Gris. He was in the joint with a stop watch running D-Ville laps in his head while waiting for them to come scrape the dirt out of his arm. Last I heard was the nurse telling him it was time for his Sponge Bath.

That Bacon Wrap was something else, but all I found around camp was a Bacon Trombone.

Well folks, I’m resting comfortably with a glass O wine and watching Le Tour. I’m gonna swing a leg over the road bike tomorrow and take an easy spin ‘for I get ta working. It’s been awhile since I’d been Donkey kicked like this, but don’t fret, I’ll by up to speed in a few weeks. I’m also gonna bottle some of that leakage and sell it for a pretty penny but of course it’s free to all Bacon Strippers.

Whens Wolfy coming over to film me changing the DRAIN?

I almost forgot. When I peel the last piece of Bacon off in 5 or 6 weeks, can we enshrine it in the Church O Bacon?

    GBG

  16. 16 Wolfy Jul 20th, 2007 at 9:16 am

    Sacred relics of the Bacocy…

Glad we don’t have your pickled, half eaten arm to enshrine.
