Team Bacon Strip Wins GMRLR!!

TBS mobs the first annual Great Mount Rose Loop Race!

Victory Photo!Riding up Calahan Ranch Road to TheRestlessApe’s house Saturday evening I saw the glow over Mt. Rose. 14 hours earlier, from the other side of the valley, I’d seen the alpenglow on the Carson Range through a smoky haze as I rode out to Verdi to meet V-Nasty.

Start of EmigrantWe cruised up Henness Pass feeling good in the nice cool air. Rolled down to Stampede and onto Emigrant. The coolest thing about a ride like this is going from point to point where you might have packed up and gone home on a normal ride. We hit donner camp, asked about the singletrack that continues from there, and headed on to Truckee.

Sawtooth climbingSafeway was a disaster. Lunch was welcome. Sawtooth was nice. The road from there past Big Chief and on around Northstar to Watson Lake was long and gradual. Few cars, little dust. We took several stretch stops and a photo-op or two. I was glad for a choice of gears, but the nasty one was quite content with one.

Watson to Brockway was a push. Fun singletrack on the Tahoe Rim Trail, but a long (or so it seemed) rocky climb in the middle was tough. Again we rolled to the trail head, regrouped and pressed on as others were loading their bikes up in cars.

kings beach snackA nice little snack in Kings Beach where I had some profound observation on Tahoe Tourists which I can’t recall. Mustn’t have been that insightful. Anyway: chocolate donuts ROCK!! That gave me the strength to climb up to Tahoe Meadows without too much suffering. V-Nasty had some fleshy looking Turkey Jurkey. Didn’t look appetizing. But she made it just fine!

a tender momentMet Smithers @ the summit. 79 miles for me and 67 for V! Not sure about the Elevation; Kangdigity is going to send me the GPS file. From there I continued on to the Summit, and V-Nasty and Smithers headed home for some more snugglin’. Found the Sky Tavern trail at the chain-up turnout past the ski resort lot and rode it down to the bottom. Then hit the old highway down to Galena and Jones Creek through Monthose to Calahan Ranch Road & B&D’s house where Smella picked me up and took me down to Bully’s for Chicken strips, fries and about a gallon of coke! 93 miles. The longest (and most challenging) day on dirt for both of us.

V-Nasty is Race Director for next year. She gets to pick the route and date. Thanks for riding with me! And thanks also to Smella and all my bestest buddies for a great BBQ last night!!

Oooohhh Mr. Wolfy, you’re such a champ. That was really fun. No wait it was hard…hang on …it was beautiful, maybe it was just plain groovy. How amazing it is to see our little world that usually sits as dots and lines on maps-come true! Thanks for having the vision. Next time, I’m sticking with real beef jerky that looks like beef jerky-no more of this Donner Party shit!
