24 Hours in the Sage

[?]

until i have time to make up some true lies, here are a few highlights:

it was a late night packing the rig and 15+ hours of driving to Gunnison Valley, CO

sunset

where we topped off the growlers at the Gunnison Brewery and headed to the high country for some trail riding.

cage's too small

with all the trails near Crested Butte, we managed to find the most gnarliest one to ride bikes on, and a few gems.

shredder!

then, i almost caught McGuinness shifting shape - explains a lot…

we called our effort on exploring trails near CB and rolled downhill into the sage and relative comfort of the 24 hour venue. the next day or so was a blur of prep for the race, meeting people, trying to rest, and dorking around. the camera got little use, until i took that extra long lap. The Shredder and Shape Shifter Sean were all business.

all business

time off the bike/race mode was cool though. i was stoked to get the chance to meet more people, rally with some race crew, and take more pics. Eric, Kat, Hojo, Tracey, Mitch, Super Dave and families were a pleasure to party, ride, and race with.

last lap!!!

last lap for Sean

and unofficial stats:

S. McGuinness (team Calavera Cycles) rode 15 laps in ~ 23:30

the Shredder (team Zopilote) rode ? 10 laps in ~23:01

J. Rider (Team Bacon Strip) rode 7!!! laps, may have made the clean sweep for longest lap time of 14:50.

I am very stoked on how well Sean and Shredder did. Myself, well, there’s room for improvement. Next year? youbetcha… maybe in the 24 Hour Townie Worlds class…

loco

thanks a 10^6 to the folks that make this event happen. this the funnest 24 hour bike race i’ve done.  how bout it - were the highs higher than the lows?

a bit tiring zonked out

as ever, the trip back across the Great Basin was pleasurable.  a wild sunset haze thanks to fires near the California Coast.  Camping in the aspens of the Snake Range, soaking in the tubs in Big Smokey V., a regular paradise!

sunset paradise

Japhy rider

ps- met John Hurley this morning. that mad cat rode the 24 Hour Townie class again this year, a few weeks after finishing the GDR - sick!  he was heading out for his last lap on a pixie bike. did anyone get pics of that?

Sounds like a blast! 24 hour races are where it’s at. Looks like good ol Calavera had his “it’s go time” face on again. Good f****** job you guys!
