i need new shoes. i kicked my ass major today. left the parent’s place at lunch time on the Salsa one speed (running full rigid these days) headed for Skull Mesa, super double flatted (probably from riding-in a perimeter trail around their house through the cholla, prickly pear, and scrub) and limped back to the bike shop in Cave Ck. 2 new tubes and by 13:00 hours, i changed directions and rode 20-ish miles of paved and dirt road to the 7 Springs TH thinking i might find my way onto Skull Mesa from above. at 15:45 i committed to a session down Trail 4 – no time for new routes. no time for pics, or even food. it’s a remote, very scratchy, very rough and eroded horse trail that dumps out in not so remote nature preserve on the edge of town. about 6 creek crossings and 11 miles later i emerged on graded gravel, at dark, 2 hours after put in. the leakiest tube was replaced by another old tube i’d already taken out b/c it leaked (well, it leaked less fast the one i was riding) added a jacket and some pants, and rode the last 5 miles of the ride on paved roads back the house through the saguaroy hills. no lights, cold hands, can’t read the street signs, and happier than all get out.
shoulda chugged a Brawndo for the apres ride. instead i settled for a Hard Lemonade, a Dos Equis, and a Guinness. nice progression, but my body is toast.
Damn, you’re serious. I need to step up what I consider a suitable ride for heading out the door. That sounds like quite the little epic.
I would also suggest some type of tire sealant for those desert areas. I am planning on some Stans Flow rims and goop to protect my tires from sharp things that like to poke holes in tubes.

Keep on keeping on.
