Another Reason to Love a Favorite

[?]

Ah, flocked trees sagging with fluffy powder. A favorite part of bombing down runs around the Lake is weaving through trees like these.

But these trees aren’t anywhere near the Lake.

Fir forest

These trees, friends, are a whole lot closer than the 40 minute drive up Mt. Rose Hwy. We’ve all been up there a thousand times, just not quite over to this hidden little spot. Here’s a couple of shots from that aspect. Total vert on the run is about 1400′ (according to the topo). Sorry, try as I might, I can’t get WordPress to render these in the correct vertical orientation. I’d leave them off, but figured y’all might want to see some of the goods that are sitting just up the hill, on the north aspect of

Peavine. These trees are tucked away on the north-facing side of the peak, immediately below the northeastern-most of the two radio tower clusters. With today’s snow conditions, it wouldn’t have been a stretch to squeeze 2,000′ out of the run. From summit to the sage flat below is just over 2,200′.

Oh yeah, good ol’ Peavine. The one and only. You know, that mountain gives and gives . . . and gives again. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to think about all the goodness being doled out to BaconStrippers up on that mountain.

Last two pics are from the top–and then bottom–of that main shot centered below the tower in the photo above. Ahhh. . . could have been a classic Nevada-style mahogany thrash, but no–Peavine delivers again. Thanks, Peavine. You’re too good to us.

I forgot to mention that I skied all the way back to the truck. Not a single scratch on the bases, either. :-)

This is a nice line indeed! The Nevada Gold Crew has been hitting it for years. Check out our blog below to see some of our pictures. The line you skied is called The Vine. Definately the most sustained relatively steep line on Peavine. Props on an excellent eye for the goods.

people with the spirit to climb any mt are always welcom with NGC. It nice to find people with the same drive and ambition to take the risk of hiking a nevada mt. You never know what you will get. Some times you get epic lines or you could get skunked and hike 6 hrs and get nothing but a leg cramp. We have scouted some great lines across central and eastern nevada and open an invite to any physically fit person that would like to see what we have seen. Also we enjoy sharing this mt and experience of finding some that can look and spend time enjoying the “low snow gems” for now peace out watch for are new post from the desatoyas mt range in central nevada.

Desatoyas . . .nice! Got a buddy with some stories about skiing them back in the early 80s (I think during the epic winter of 83). Good to know you were still able to eek out a line up there.

You might be interested in checking out this trip report from another baconstripper on the Weethump blog:

There’s a reason you won’t find photos of the actual skiing. But rest assured, they will come. Oh yes, they will come. Redbeard and Hambone, I’m thinking this coming weekend is time for “the mission.”

Thank you for taking the time to look at are pics.We enjoy the feed back from people that have stories to share like your crews. Were looking at Mt. Grant in the wassuk range by walker lake and hawthorn, Nv We hope to have it completed soon. We beleave there should be some decent lines left since the pk does go to 11239. Hope to see more of your crews adventurs and experiences through the rest of winter and what is to come of summer. Maybe weather permiting we could get a mission together since we all share a common goal of doing something new or at least fells like your doing something new. Peace for now and again thanks taking the time to check are stuff out we know you could have just ignored it.

Mt. Grant! Now that’s a cool idea. Was just down that way last weekend. Not skiing, but did notice that snow is lean all the way up to 7500. Of course, that’s purt’near 4000 more vert to work with. Definitely spread the word when you get the pics from that trip! Sounds like good times. Keep the NV Gold coming!

I’ve often wondered about Grant, but tend to think it is not worth it. First it is DOD land and so access is huge issue since the main road to the summit begins by the lake and is DOD from beginning to end. they definitely drop bombs and mines in that area and carry out other tactical training operations there, so be mindful of your step if you guys do go. Also, I think the place gets pretty hammered by the winds. The Wassuks are high enough that the higher systems that nail the Sierra and Sweetwaters also rake that range.

That being said the peak is mighty and the slope looks like a lot fun, especially if you can nail the shot ala heavenly of a skier ripping about a lake that is not tahoe. there are some skiers in hawthorne that may have more beta for you as well, but i think they tend to head towards the Sierra and June Mtn in particular since it is the closest lift served skiing to town.

i’ve also heard of folks poking around in the desatoya, good camping at the mouth of big den, the stillwaters and clan alpines.

Thanks for info on the land Redbeard. We also did some research and accsess is a huge problem, but with the spring time conditions and improving roads accross nevada we hope to be able to put something together for yall. We have some other options for are upcoming trips though. If it just dosent sound worth it after we spend a little more time researching it we may head east along 80 and see what star peak and the humboldt range have to offer. Be in touch soon hopefully with something new to show.

    Thanks NGC

there’s a recent post by a friend of mine on teletips about star peak, they found a nice 3000ft line with pretty minimal hiking/bushwhacking effort.

good luck out there, have a blast!

Have you guys heard much about state line pk in the fort sage mts. Its just out side of Doyle, Ca and is about an hour drive North of reno depending on where you depart. Give or take a little time depending on how much you like to take pics of the mt. It has a strong north aspect and can offer a lot for the Reno local if they are looking
for something new. Alhtough we have not skied it we have scouted it. With are trip out to this range a week or so ago we saw some fun things to play around on but with temps in the 70’s coming up you know the snow will go fast. Im going to try to get out there this thursday the 10th. At least if worst come to worst we will know the roads in to the mts a little better for next winter.
Ps save the petersons I love those mts and cant stand to lose them we will be at the meeting tommorrow night and voice are opinion. HOpe you guys can make it, power numbers right.
