Oh, and I should add that the top of Heartbreak Hill is usually occupied by Boston College fratboys, hockey fans, and other assorted riffraff. Two years ago, a runner cramped up and stumbled at the top of the hill, and the crowd chanted, "Puke! Puke! Puke!" It's a tough crowd up there. To be fair, they cheered lustily when he staggered back out onto the course.

Wolfy is correct...I did run the SS 50-mile not once, but twice...living proof that some people just don't learn the first time. I never won it, but came close in 2000. I was the leader through 36 miles, then had to take a short break. Finished third, I think. BTW this is a very good race--tough, scenic course, and generally good organization. And yes, many runners would appreciate some baconaide. You get strange cravings and/or hallucinations after about 30 miles or so.

Re: beer handoffs. I just finished my third Boston Marathon--didn't run well this year but that's another story. I mention this because the Boston Hash House Harriers (described as "a drinking club with a running problem"), as usual, established their "aid" station at the bottom of Heartbreak Hill. They pass out beer (of course) and for those willing to wait 30 seconds or so, you can be served the mixed drink or cocktail of your choice. Martinis don't usually sound good to me until a couple of hours after the finish, so I only took beer.

very cool! if i'm in town that weekend i'll be sure to get out there and hollar encouragement. shoot, maybe it'd be fun to camp out somewhere on the course and get the griddle going. offer up some baconaide to passing runners.

have fun!
