Hard rock climbing

Well, the rock was harder than the climbing, but it was great to get out!

Insideous Crack

I popped up to Donner with My sisters Sunday. Did Insidious Crack and Jellyroll Arch. Refreshing. I haven’t done much climbing in recent years for one reason or another, but I still love it. Climbing adds a layer to physical activity that it’s hard to duplicate on a bike, skis or trail. The fear, the need to focus, the shiny metal gear…

Hope to do a gorge trip soon.

i came about this in a sort of happenstanceclickthroughandbrowse sort of way, which led to the much more interesting and ultimately pertinent podcast available on iTunes  (linked at the end of the text in the blog about him).  this professor’s lecture podcast validates indifference to hurrythefuckupandwait western stress.  thank you Caylin Barter for the indirect connect to Dr. Sapolsky’s findings…  sit back, have a homebrew, enjoy the show and consider how well you may age if you have a hobby, some buddies, and don’t sweat the small stuff.

happy weekend,

Bacon Vodka?

Bacon Vodka

makes up one pint  Fry up three strips of bacon. Add cooked bacon to a clean pint sized mason jar. Trim the ends of the bacon if they are too tall to fit in the jar. Or you could go hog wild and just pile in a bunch of fried up bacon scraps. Optional: add crushed black peppercorns. Fill the jar up with vodka. Cap and place in a dark cupboard for at least three weeks. That’s right- I didn’t refrigerate it. At the end of the three week resting period, place the bacon vodka in the freezer to solidify the fats. Strain out the fats through a coffee filter to yield a clear filtered pale yellow bacon vodka.  Decant into decorative bottles and enjoy.

Extreme Urban Cliff Diving, Hamburg style.

Check out this video from the RedBull Event. Man, those pop-chuggers are NUTS!

On August 23rd, an extraordinary even took place in the German port-city of Hamburg. The world’s top 10 cliff-divers gathered here to demonstrate their abilities and claim the title of 2008 Red Bull Cliff Diving Champion. The winner of such a competition is not even important, just being able to accomplish such incredible acrobatic feats is remarkable. These people accelerate from 0 to 90 km/h and drop back to 0 in a free fall that only lasts 2.5 seconds. See more

    Bend Oregon Trail Riding

In between bouts of conferencing my ass off at the American Advertising Federation’s Western Region Conference and Filming episodes of Tallcan.TV, ramPaige and I got out to ride trail in Bend 3 Times!
    Bend Trail Riding
Here we are putting our mark on Phil’s Trail!
    Bend Trail Riding
This awesome trail is along the Descutes river just behind the Seventh Mountain Resort where we were staying. We rode this at sunset, then sunrise the next morning. Both are the absolute best times to ride almost anywhere I’ve ever ridden.

The trail in Bend, at least what we rode, was smooth, rolling windy singletrack. Easy for the most part, but the trees and the scenery was unbeatable. If we had persisted in riding until the scenery started to tank we would still be riding.

I didn’t get to hook up with any locals. Bummer. But I did get out to the Brew pub downtown for a cajun bacon burger…. Bend is now on my list of places to move to. Damn nice up there!

    a mobile baconstrip

Some of you know about the Website Twitter and that is is what they call a “microblog.” Since The Bacon Strip is a blog i have been trying to find a way to incorporate microblogging into what we do here. And until now i haven’t figured out how to add this content to what i post on Twitter.

    identi.ca

That’s where identi.ca comes in. identi.ca is identi.cal to twitter is most ways, but it has better functionality and is more stable because fewer people are using it. I don’t know anyone on it in Reno for example.

Twitter is for techgeeks, identi.ca is for dirtbags

So here’s the way I see this working. You post a message through the web or text message, and the whole team gets it. We can then coordinate Dawn Patrols, set up rides, and line up beer sessions. I’d use this exclusively for TBS related communications. Otherwise I have no use for it at all. Also if you remember the spate of txt messages from the 24 hours in old pueblo last year, this will be far easier and more fun.

Any questions? You can post by text message, IM or web, and you can turn it on and off from your phone by sending a text message. You can send private messages and replies. Sign up, then go to my profile and subscribe to my updates and the rest of the team. Badda Bing Badda Boom…

    What do you think?

    del.icio.us ba.con for August 21st through September 12th

Sizzling hot bacon for August 21st through September 12th:

    • Glowspek Pedals - We got a few of these clever little pedals, and loved them so much we’re selling them here. Not only is it a solid platform pedal, but it lights up with its own internal generator! Lights are always much more effective than reflectors for being seen at night, and these also have a pulsing action that catches just about anyone’s attention. The LEDs are a warm amber-red color… the color of awesome!
    • Temporary bike lanes OK’d in SW Reno | www.rgj.com | Reno Gazette-Journal - Fourth Street would be re-striped from four traffic lanes to three to make room for bike lanes.
The three-lane configuration would include a center-turn lane.
Several cyclists dressed in their brightly colored gear attended the meeting and those who spoke said having bike lanes would make the area safer for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.
    • Ezra’s seatless bicycle - “I’ve mentioned Ezra before as the guy who makes Fast Boy wooden fenders, wooden handlebars, and steel bicycles. Ezra, 34, was recently diagnosed with cancer of the nether regions. His doctor told him no more bicycle riding, because sitting on the bike seat can damage those nether regions.”
    • Fat Cyclist » Blog Archive » An Open (Love) Letter to the City of Draper - Hay Captain Red Beard! we need a report on this. Get your ass on it.

“I swear, Draper, there is 30% more singletrack in this park right now than there was last year, and there?s clearly more on the way.”
