Brad L. & I noticed an ugly-looking fracture after skiing Rose this morning on the south side of the East Bowl access road just before it enters the parking lot.  We thought we’d take a look to see whether the snow cover has improved at the lower elevations and saw the obvious results of an avalanche.  After looking at the scene for a minute, we could see a single set of tracks descending, then an uptrack that ended about 50 feet below the crown with no (visible) exiting uptrack…it didn’t look good, so we reported to ski patrol and they initiated a search.  As of now, RGJ reports that the search continues, but that it looks like the slide occurred yesterday and no one has been reported missing.  Here’s a photo showing the fracture and another highlighting the truncated uptrack.  The slide appears to have occurred as a result of the hiker passing over a convex bulge into the gully where the slope steepens.  One reason I wanted to post this is because a lot of us ski this general area – so please avoid the steeper slopes of the gullies.

    SHIT!

I’ve never skied that line. Mostly cause it’s so scary. This makes it more scary. Good work calling that one in Taldor! I wonder if LowCO2 is out there with Banshee…

That said, Who’s up for Dawn Patrol tomorrow?

    Latest update is good news:

Authorities initially feared someone could have been trapped on the edge of Mount Rose-Ski Tahoe because they found tracks leading into the avalanche area but not out of it.

But once they got a closer look, they discovered there were in fact tracks leading out the other side most likely made by someone crawling, Washoe County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Brooke Keast said.

“They didn’t recognize it because they looked different,” she said. “The hiker crawled out of it if they got involved with it at all.”

Wow, scary! I was eyeballing that very line on Saturday, but decided against it.

Wow!! Pretty sure Jwox and me skied that in several occasions last year. Glad to hear noone is hurt…at least so far as we know. Can’t ski in the morning but want to get out and tour this weekend.

The skier was found near Emerald Bay. I guess that means Maggies or Jakes likely?
