galenaThis looks like a great new race for us! Looks like the races go up the old Mt. Rose Highway through Sky Tavern. I know TheRestlessApe is gonna hit it. I’m not super into the whole suffer up a dirt road thing. LowCO2 will likely destroy it as well. See you there!

What: Mountain Bike Races and Festival
When: Sunday September 27, 2009
Where: Galena Regional Park

Local Reno/Galena resident and Galena Times Publisher, Richard Keillor, founded Galena Fest, a community-minded event to raise much needed funds to keep Galena Creek Park open, safe and clean, and to ultimately re-establish outdoor programs at the Park.

“While several other Washoe County parks have been adopted by various groups, we believe this is the first community-wide fundraiser with proceeds going directly toward the park’s upkeep and programming,” Keillor said.

Key components of Galena Fest are two mountain bike races, The Bloody Rose and The Thorn. These climbs offer staged, competitive and strenuous routes through the Mt. Rose corridor along mountain bike trails to finish lines at Relay Peak beyond Mt. Rose Summit and at the Wall in Sky Tavern.

Add in activities for kids, including mountain bike races for 5 to 13-year-olds, a Big Fish Contest, for 4-11 year olds, and pinwheel and sand-castle creations for all at Galena Creek Regional Park; Galena Fest aspires to become the leading outdoor event in Reno and a new community tradition in the Galena Forest.

The festival atmosphere includes BBQ and food tents, a beer and beverage terrace featuring local favorites, and live music and campfire in Eagle Meadow. Program partners will have a chance to highlight their wares while neighbors and friends celebrate an unprecedented, active family outing under the canopy of Jeffrey Pines.

Proceeds from Galena Fest 2009 will be used to staff and supply the new Visitor’s Center, to purchase bear-proof trash receptacles, to help service the Park and to eventually re-establish outdoor outreach programs such as kids’ campfire nights, wilderness education classes and recreational programs.

The non-profit organization, led by Keillor, is run by a team of committed and talented volunteers led by Jane Holman, Galena Fest Event Manager.

Galena Fest LLC, founded in 2009, is an all volunteer, 501 (c) 3 [pending] organization with the express goal to raise funds to keep Galena Creek Regional Park accessible & safe and to re-establish outdoor programs at the Park.
