What you probably don’t know is who built that. You aren’t going to find out here cause I don’t know either. But I can tell you who did NOT build that trail.

I bring this up because The Poedunks, often get credited, much to their DIScredit, for having built it. They did not. In fact, The Poedunks weren’t formed until March/April of 2007 and the bacon strip trail was built in early March of that year.

The problem is best outlined in the emails below.

From: Gregory Peek
To: Tuesday Night Riding Group
LINK

Tuesday riders,

See below for a special announcement from Dale Beesmer, President of Poedunks. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Poedunks, they are the group of dedicated MTB riders who have built most of the trails at Peavine – including Halo and Bacon Strip. We all owe them a debt of gratitude.

They will be with us tomorrow night. Stop by their table. Support them. And, most importantly, thank them!

~gp

The Poedunks TOTALLY appreciate Greg’s support and that of the whole of the Tuesday Night Riding Group, and understand why we’d get credit for building a favorite local trail, but the fact is that The Poedunks did not built the bacon strip trail. But only if the USFS and Washoe County Parks trust us and we can maintain a good relationship can The Poedunks continue to build new trails, and maintain old trails, and get existing trails put on the map.

To that end, I sent this to Greg, which he posted here.

Subject: the bacon strip trail

Gregory,

I’m Mike founder of The Bacon Strip blog [http://www.teambaconstrip.com/], and a founding member of The Poedunks.

I want to point out that the trail known as “the bacon strip” is an illegal bootleg trail and was not built, maintained, sanctioned, or approved by The Poedunks. In fact, the trail predates incorporation of The Poedunks and any work we did as The Poedunks.

When people go on the record associating the reputable, legal, official Poedunks with a bootleg trail of any kind, but particularly the bacon strip, it damages our relationships with agencies who approve our projects, take our recommendations and allow us to continue working to build, maintain and advocate for mountain bike trails.

I did not build the bacon strip. I don’t know who built the bacon strip. At one point i had an email with incriminating evidence in it, but that’s long gone. We can say that it is a bootleg trail that was built in early spring of 2007 by local mountain bikers. Also, at this time I am not on the board of The Poedunks and do not speak for them or represent them. Iam an active supporter, volunteer and member and encourage TNRG members to donate to The Poedunks and become members.

Please let your membership know that The Poedunks did not build this trail. Please help them keep the reputation that lets them maintain and improve existing trails, as well as build new trails like Halo and Connector and hopefully incorporate illegal bootleg trails like the bacon strip and that bootleg that went in west of keystone last year into the map and add them to the legal trail inventory.

Here’s the first record i have of the bacon strip trail on my blog: It is dated march 2007. It also shows how the trail got it’s name: I simply made it up for the map.

Here’s a post from that same period which is the beginning of what would become the Ppoedunks, but is before incorporation and before The Podunks’ MOU with the USFS:

Thanks, and have a great ride!

So in summary, Poedunks didn’t build the bacon strip, but with our support, they can help bring more legal and well maintained trail to Peavine, and perhaps rehabilitate bootleg trails, like tbs.

Thanks to Greg Peek and the Tuesday Night Ride Group for supporting the Poedunks!

-Mike

Speak up for Trails, Walking and Biking Now

On Tuesday, September 15, Senators John McCain (Ariz.) and Tom Coburn (Okla.) issued two amendments to the FY10 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill. If passed, these amendments would eliminate the majority of available federal funds for trails, walking and bicycling.

Amendment 2370 would prohibit the use of federal funds for pedestrian or bicycle facilities, efforts to reduce vehicle collisions with wildlife, or other specified Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects if the Highway Trust Fund cannot cover unfunded highway authorizations.

Amendment 2371 is even trickier; while it claims to allow states to opt out of spending on TE projects, the actual amendment text in fact notes that “None of the funds made available by this Act may be used to implement” TE projects.
