29er party!

Saturday the 29th was ~37th-ish annual Vulture Day (observed) and we did our best to make the migration to Bend, OR to participate. A few hours into the 6 hour drive we plowed head-on into our first snow storm driving experience of the season - sweet!

first snow storm of the season!

We arrived at Jessica’s place before midnight and kept her and Wade up a few more hours talking and chilling before pitching the tent on the driveway. In the morning, I was up with the sun under a heavy frost and to find ice in the dog water - brrr! A very excellent breakfast of bacon containing quiche (I don’t remember its actual name) was had at Bend’s Sparrow Cafe, along with some super high octane java. Wade is stoked on the good people that run that place, fostering community and artist endeavors in a decommissioned industrial complex that was originally the towns foundry. You can’t imagine how good the chocolate birthday cake he got from them was!  Here he’s prying Whitney for her secret recipe.

The afternoon was spent riding the trails in local woods - twisty, a bit technical leading to great views from nearby buttes. Amanda, Oso, Chris S, Wade, and I span away the day having a great time. Cool trails out there, and not a soul besides us on them! How’s that for a birthday ride?  All the while, Jessica was making an excellent effort at preparing her home and kitchen for the sushi birthday feast.  Thanks for having us all over, Jessica!

scratch Vulture!

soon thereafter, friends of Wade & Jessica converged on her place to partake in keg#2 of Wade’s whiskey flavored porter homebrew, build and mow down on some sushi, laugh, long board, fire watch, smash a pinata, and revel for their friend’s birthday. What a great group of pals you guys have up there. it was a pleasure to meet everyone and get our party on!

2 thousand miles and the VT125

THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS - I had to get something going, and will fill it in as I have more time to write. I don’t have any pics of the actual race, but hope to poach digital pics from the web. let me know if you/someone you know has some to share. cheers!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

oh boy, for the amount of time and fiscal resources i commit to traveling to race a few times a year, one would think that i’d get better at optimizing my probability for success in said event - finishing it, at least. this latest attempt had me traveling solo again (i must be a handful to roadtrip with), across the Basin and Range, across the Colorado Plateau, and over the Monarch Crest of the Rockies, into the headwaters of the Arkansas River. i knew it’d be more than a day’s ride, but hadn’t done the math. turns out it’s an even 1,000 miles from my abode in Reno to Salida, CO. with fuel typically $3/gal or more, and traveling solo, taking the motorbike was the only sensible option…

Team Bacon Strip Wins GMRLR!!

TBS mobs the first annual Great Mount Rose Loop Race!

Victory Photo!Riding up Calahan Ranch Road to TheRestlessApe’s house Saturday evening I saw the glow over Mt. Rose. 14 hours earlier, from the other side of the valley, I’d seen the alpenglow on the Carson Range through a smoky haze as I rode out to Verdi to meet V-Nasty. Stolby all the way

SteadyB sent me this vid from Patagonia. These people must be a lot better acquainted with tragedy than we, and therefore seek joy a bit more aggressively.

Bike Riding St. George Style

goosberryHey all,

I’ve been running low on the radar for a while, busy with school, work and wedding planning. But, I have been riding. Last weekend I was in Southern Utah enjoying some Slickrock. Here is a link to some of the photos I took.

Enjoy.

Gas or grit

From TBS contributor, Localcrew:

I signed up for this work at a time when special-interest-fueled politicians spout all variety of appalling solutions for energy independence, including petroleum extraction schemes in some of our country’s most remote and wild landscapes. With this in mind, it seemed to me the height of hypocrisy to burn gallon after gallon of gasoline in a highly motorized attempt to create wilderness—one of the last bastions of silent, motorless peace. That is why I decided to complete my survey work by bike.

Sidecar Dreams

Since my early days, I’ve had a special respect for the idea of Western Sidecars. In my view, rickshaws, adult tricycles and other pedal-powered utility machines have an important place in a future of waning petro-fuels. But these utility machines do not represent leisure and freedom the way that a sidecar rig does. When I think of Western Sidecars, I think of the kid in junior high with a platform of expanded steel welded to his bike with a mismatched wheel. Once I saw him hauling 3 or 4 standing passengers to a fight afterschool - pure leisure. I also think of a slow ride on a classic BMW along Franktown road, or maybe Highway 49. For that matter, even a Ural Offroad Sidecar Setup would satisfy that quest for simultaneous leisure and adventure.

Indian Bicycle and Sidecar

Now, I love to dream, but I am faced with the realities of my life. I love riding my EX 250 when I’m not pedaling, but my wife just isn’t down with my hopes of putting our new son in a motorcycle sidecar anytime soon. Recently, however, a novel idea has come to my attention. The concept of the Western Sidecar has been adapted to a bicycle child carrier sidecar! Well, my wife thinks this is less safe than the pull-behind design for two reasons: the problem of car-door openings and the fact that the cyclist takes up more road. I know that the cyclist has the right of way and should be treated as a car by traffic, but I am less likely to be aggressive with a child in tow (or on the side) than I would be flying solo. Any thoughts or input on this would be appreciated, as I anticipate making a decision in the coming weeks on the type of carrier. In the meantime, please enjoy some of these bicycle sidecar designs and I hope to see more of these on the streets in the future.

Well, one out of three ain’t bad

Who’s going? What you riding? When we leaving? I know I can’t breathe steam on the tails of the freeriders, but I can ride the hell out of some 33.3 miles for shizzle.
