Finally, we have both a skier and a concept that can update the James Bond classic ski chase sceen between Telly Savalas’ Goons and Geore Lazonby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. This is Skier JP Auclair doing some street skiing in Sherpas Cinema’s new film All.ICan.

This is a really cool video. But it’s missing something. That something is the bad guys. I’m of a mind that there’s no point in skiing down stairs, roofs, ASPHAULT unless someone is chasing you. While JP does it with sick style and aplomb, I just can’t get behind the idea of skiing on shitty snow, and NON-snow surfaces. This is what bicycles are for.

Seems like the interwebs have been buzzing lately about La Ruta. I saw this report on the possible leader group and another one that had a lot of the same information.

The recon trip I did in September included riding a big chunk of the race, but not all. The video I posted before was basically day 1 (split in two for the recon). We didn’t ride day 2 because they hadn’t announced the exact route, but I’ve heard from some people who were just in Costa Rica after the announcement of the route and apparently Day 2 starts with a “heinous” 6 mile climb that is apparently super steep. And I know they can build very steep roads there. The videos I have for this post are the bulk of days 3 and 4. These are called the volcano day and the beach day. You might think that “beach day” sounds really relaxing, but it’s not. It includes 30 KM of railroad tracks, and by “railroad tracks” I mean literally riding down between the rails. Makes the full-sprung bike worth every penny. The video from much of that was unwatchable because it was just too bouncy to even be entertaining, you can see just a bit of it. Plus there are a bunch of bridges you have to walk across. And the beach is hot and windy and you just want to finish. I’ll take the volcanos, any day. The funny thing about this whole experience is that I started it back in February, and we had snow on the ground and I was riding in the snow. Just today on a mountain bike ride early I found my tires crunching on some snow, much of the ground was frozen and the front tire even slipped a bit on the ice. We’ve come full-circle on this one, from the warming days of spring to the heat of summer and back to cooling days of fall: birth, growth, celebration, harvest and of everything in between. In the most perfect of timings, I will ride La Ruta the week before Thanksgiving. Not to get to soft on you dirtbags, but I’m reminded of how much I do have to be thankful for and this experience, this riding and even just the ability to ride like I do are among the things I’ll be thinking of as I’m slogging through mud, rain, volcanos and sand.

Kayaking isn’t prominently featured on TBS, but there are some boaters in out ranks. Didn’t see any of you on Saturday (a week ago) during Reno River Festival, but I did get some footage of the quarter finals.

Saw some sweet boating from Scot Sady, Eric Jackson, Billy Bob Malesky, KB, Brian Kirk, Nick Troutman and Jason Craig. From what I understand these are some highly reputable yakers. They phonixed their monkeys up one side and down the other…
