“MODERN PAUL – 1-, 2- or 8-Speed Marvels
In the middle of the 1970s a half-dozen guys modified cruiser bikes into what they called CLUNKERS and piloted down the hillsides near San Francisco. Later, this hippie fun became known as mountain biking. For our MODERN SERIES, this rebellious history is inspiration and initiation. So we got to the bottom of it – with a big grin.” READ MORE

Google just added a cool new feature to their Maps Application that lets you pick out routes that are best for cycling. Looks like they are using data from city maps based on mapped bike routes. As we know, Washoe RTC doesn’t necessarily have all the existing bike routes on the map, but this is a start.

“To use the new biking directions you need to click on the ‘Get Directions’ link in Google Maps and choose the ‘Bicycling’ option from the drop down menu. When you select the ‘Bicycling’ option the map view will change to show the roads and paths that are suitable for biking. Bike paths with no cars are shown in dark green and roads with bike lanes are shown in light green.” Read More

Here are two routes I mapped from my office to UNR.

It would be awesome if google had a way for local groups to contribute to that map.

I have beed struggling recently with what to call the population of skiiers at the local Tahoe resorts on twin tips, rocking Skull Candy’s and wearing the kind of day-glow baggage that I wore to school about 20 years ago. You know the type. Equally at home in the park as the cliffs and always pounding PBR on the chairlift, and fixing their hair in their reflection in your goggles.

Well they have a name…

Snow Bro

“Can be identified by big colorful shades,(80s types or aviators) shaggy hair flocking in the air, striped beanies, big oversized: jackets, basketball jerseys, tall tees, or big snow pants, have wide stance on their snowboard for steeeze. Drag out their words like they’re retarded like “yaaa broo so gnarly sooo gnarls. I never thought i was gonna ride that one out” Snow bros are everywhere but must abundantly found at CU and CSU campus’s. Usually wannabes but the true snow bros know how to shred.” -Urban Dictionary

Here’s how you become a Snow Bro

“Get steezed out. Bright colors and flat-brimmmed caps will help with this. Bonus points for stylie wrap-around sunglasses. Don’t forget the brodana as an essential accessory with many uses.” Read More

I supposed this is what we have to look forward to. Anything is better than stretch pants and powder jackets.

Pyrofloptic set off a wet slide on the south face of the Fire Plug that ran all the way to the bottom. It moved slowly and took the snow down to the layer before the Friday night storm. It was sketch. Big enough to bury a person or a small black dog who likes to chase snow balls. Pyro was able to call Juni off. She was chasing the damn thing down the hill!

EDIT:

I forgot to mention that we experiences some sketchy avalanche conditions in a couple of places. There is about 6 to 12 inches of new wet snow on top of a crust, which seems to be on top of a loose layer, though there doesn’t appear to be much more than 3 feet total in that particular area. There was some slab sliding of that top layer as we hiked back up. The slab we saw was only about the size of a card table and didn’t slide more than 6 inches. It was about 9 inches thick.

Then right at the top there was a lot of whumping and cracking as we traversed. This was within 5 meters of the road. I broke trail very fast, Huck had a reprieve from the insisting advances of “Uncle Frank” and Juni didn’t seem to notice.

Cracks didn’t propagate more than a ski length and there was only settling, no sliding. Still, it was sketchy since we were above a wide open area with trees below…

This observation seems consistent with the Sierra Avalanche Center’s Concern #2 for February 24th, 2010 at 07:01 AM :

Avalanche Concern #2:

“As the snow fell last night, temperatures increased causing a layer of heavy, wet snow to accumulate on top of a layer of lighter, colder snow. This heavy layer on top of a lighter layer created an upside-down snowpack. Today, adding a person on top of the heavy, wet snow on the surface could overload the lighter snow layer below resulting in avalanche activity. These types avalanches will be possible on slopes steeper than 35 degrees where this upside-down snowpack exists.”

Just a reminder that the auction for Barrett’s Banner Sunrise print is less than 3 days away from ending. It’s in a really nice black wood frame on a white matte. It’ll make a great motivator for you to get geared up for the coming Sierra Nevada backpacking season.

About the Print:

Barrett is a really good landscape photographer. This last year he switched over to digital, but this is one from his old Pentax 645n on Fuji Velvia 50 film. It’s a pretty stunning image from really a stunning morning @ Thousand Island Lake near Mammoth CA. The wind was HOWLING over the sierra crest and the clouds looked about as ominous as I’ve ever seen.

Bacon Socks

On another note, I came up with a potential idea for some socks:

Thinking the graphic on the sock cuff and Team Bacon Strip on the foot. That way it will have mass appeal…

SO… BID ON THE PRINT! (and check out Barrett’s other photos), and let me know what you think of the sock idea…
