And not the good kind.

Here are the Two Reports from this week:

I found two sections of trail that had barbed wire strung across it this morning. One was at the top of the downhill course and the other was across the single track access from the jeep road onto BLM land. (looking down onto the radio towers, I don’t know the name of the trail) We took the wire down, but there could be more out there, so please be careful! -Rick

And

6/1- 1:00pm Found barbed wire along the trail at the top of the knob south of the houses at the end of Hoge road. One strand was running the middle of the trail for about 20 feet. Another was set up across the trail, at ankle height, being held in by a couple rocks to keep tension. It was all removed.

Also, just to the southwest of the above location there is a steep technical section after a plank that crosses an old mine. Numerous boulders had been placed in this steep technical section (both the gnarly drop and the easier route a few feet away). Unfortunately I was late for an appointment and couldn’t move all the boulders.

Now that I’ve thoroughly confused everyone with my goofy directions, I’ll get to my point- Someone is intentionally messing with the trails in an attempt to inflict harm. Without getting into who or what may have angered the people putting these traps up- we all need to be careful out there and keep eachother apprised of any other traps we encounter. Thankfully nobody has been hurt. -Pete

What find most surprising about this is that no one has a cameraphone photo of the place they’re talking about and no one an pinpoint it on a map.

WTF people! There was some discussion on the Reno Wheelmen Yahoo Group thread about whether there was recent biker/hiker conflicts that might have precipitated retribution, but i find that unlikely. I’m betting it’s one of the landowners in the area who is sick of people yelling at him not to shoot his guns across the trail. Perhaps someone finally got the cops to catch him in the act.

Regardes, up hill or downhill, DON’T RIDE LIKE A DICK, be careful, and FOR GOD SAKE GET A FUCKING PHOTOGRAPH and mark it on the goddamn map if you see anything.

Juni and I went up cow canyon yesterday AM. Weather was great! The morning sun coming over the ridge from mogul was beautiful and even though there is all that building going on that area still seems almost remote.

Only intrusions are the sound of the Interstate, the one house poking over the hill from Mogul and the trenches, braids, stutterbumps and mudboggs cut into the trail by ATVs and motorbikes.

What used to be a sweet fast flowy and technical downhill is now unrideable in some spots thanks to motorbikers riding up the hill under full throttle in wet to muddy conditions. Now I’m not going to say those guys have no right to the trail (cause the USFS has already said that) but this could have been, and still could be, a good area where we can share the trail. The only thing we ALL need to do is concede this one simply tenant of two wheeled fun: If you can’t get up or down something without dragging your rear wheel, or digging a rut up a climb then you’re a hack and need to slow down and learn how to ride. Or am I missing something? Is that the goal these guys have? Do they see a nice trail and say, “Wow! how awesome would it be to obliterate that and make it almost impossible to ride!!!!!”

That said, this trail is not well aligned and is completely unsustainable even under the best of circumstances. Perhaps the Poedunks will get to it one of these years. I can’t help but think that when citizens look up at areas like that and then consider weather they want the City / County to limit development they think, “what’s the point? It’s just road warriors tearing shit up out there anyway…”
